Imphal, Jan 26 (NationPress) In an effort to combat the illegal extortion of funds from civilians, government personnel, contractors, and others, the Manipur government declared on Sunday the formation of a specialized Integrated Anti-Extortion Cell under the Home Department, as stated by a senior official.
Manipur Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh announced this initiative, stating that members from the State Police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), Assam Rifles, and the Army would be part of the cell.
The Chief Secretary mentioned that a toll-free number for the anti-extortion cell will be available 24/7. He emphasized that this initiative aims to develop an effective and resilient response system to manage extortion demands and related activities, thereby ensuring the safety and security of the general populace.
Singh, a 1993-batch IAS officer who assumed the role of Chief Secretary in the troubled state on January 15, remarked: “Reports have indicated that various individuals, including government officials, have been threatened with dire consequences through calls, messages, or letters from unlawful organizations if their extortion demands are not fulfilled. These activities significantly jeopardize the law-and-order situation in the state.”
Prior to his role as Chief Secretary of Manipur, Singh served as Secretary of the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
The Chief Secretary urged the public, including government officials, to report any instances of threats or extortion (via calls, messages, or demand letters) to the Integrated Anti-Extortion Cell through the toll-free number: 1800 202 3326.
“Once a report is received, the cell will coordinate with the respective police stations to take necessary action. The public is also advised to refrain from visiting unsafe areas,” he stated.
Singh affirmed that the Manipur government seeks the full cooperation of its citizens in fighting against these illegal activities and is dedicated to protecting everyone from such troubling demands and extortions.
