Imphal, Jan 26 (NationPress) In an effort to tackle the illegal extortion of funds from civilians, government employees, contractors, and others, the government of Manipur announced the formation of a dedicated Integrated Anti-Extortion Cell under the Home Department on Sunday, as stated by a senior official.

The Chief Secretary of Manipur, Prashant Kumar Singh, detailed that this specialized cell will include members from the State Police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), Assam Rifles, and the Army.

Singh mentioned that a toll-free hotline for the anti-extortion cell would be available around the clock. This initiative is designed to establish an effective and robust response system to tackle extortion demands and related activities, thereby ensuring the public's safety and security.

Singh, who has served as a 1993-batch IAS officer since January 15, indicated that recent reports have shown that numerous individuals, including government officials, have faced threats via calls, messages, or letters from illegal organizations if their extortion demands are not fulfilled. Such activities are a serious threat to the law and order in the state.

Prior to his role as Chief Secretary, Singh was the Secretary of the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

The Chief Secretary urged the public, including government employees, to report any instances of threats or extortion (whether calls, messages, or demand letters) to the Integrated Anti-Extortion Cell using the toll-free number: 1800 202 3326.

“Once a report is received, the cell will collaborate with the respective police stations to initiate suitable action. The public is also advised to refrain from visiting unsafe areas,” he stated.

Singh expressed that the government of Manipur seeks the complete support of its citizens in fighting against these unlawful practices and remains dedicated to protecting everyone from such unsettling demands and extortion.
