New Delhi, July 24 (NationPress) In a forthright discussion with IANS on Thursday, the leader of the All India Muslim Council, Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, addressed the recent uproar regarding Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav allegedly conducting a political meeting within the confines of the Parliament Mosque. He also provided insights on the QR code mandate during the Kanwar Yatra and the broader themes of identity and secularism.
Here are some key excerpts from the interview:
IANS: There are reports that Akhilesh Yadav held a meeting inside the Parliament Mosque along with his party’s MPs, along with some viral images. What is your perspective?
Maulana Tauqeer Raza: I have come across similar claims and seen those pictures. However, I personally doubt that any meeting took place inside the mosque. It’s plausible that after leaving Parliament, the Imam, who is also an MP, invited them in for refreshments. From what I know, neither the Imam would allow such a meeting in the mosque, nor would Akhilesh Yadav be foolish enough to conduct a political discussion there.
IANS: Do you believe Akhilesh Yadav is attempting to convey solidarity with the Muslim community?
Maulana Tauqeer Raza: Actions speak louder than words. If your actions are noble, you will stand by people when they are in need. Just being present in a mosque, wearing a cap, or draping a scarf does not signify anything. I actually have disdain for those Hindus who wear a Muslim cap merely for appearances, and similarly, for Muslims who try to mislead Hindus using religious symbols. Genuine secularism is demonstrated through your actions. Stay true to your beliefs and cultivate friendships with everyone — humanity demands that.
IANS: Do you think images of political leaders in mosques uplift the spirits of Muslims?
Maulana Tauqeer Raza: Historically, mosques have served as meeting places for our scholars and intellectuals during the fight for freedom against British rule, often in secret. However, utilizing mosques for political activities today is intolerable. If any such gathering occurred, I vehemently condemn it. Using a place of worship for political ends is unjustifiable. I advise the Imam to be extremely vigilant about such matters.
IANS: What’s your opinion on the QR code directive during the Kanwar Yatra, especially since the Supreme Court has declined to stay it for now?
Maulana Tauqeer Raza: I have consistently questioned the need for QR codes. If we are Muslims, our identity should be embraced with pride. Hiding our Muslim identity suggests embarrassment. We need individuals who confidently declare, 'Yes, I am a Muslim, and I am Indian.' When you carry your identity with pride, there’s no necessity for QR codes or name tags — your appearance should make you recognizable. This applies to Hindus as well; any Hindu concealing their identity is equally at fault.
