Mayawati condemns Ghaziabad teen Surya Chauhan's murder, demands swift justice
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Saturday, 30 May expressed deep grief over the murder of Surya Chauhan, a 17-year-old student from Khoda Colony in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, calling the incident 'extremely tragic and deeply concerning' and demanding that those responsible face legal punishment without delay.
What Happened
Surya, a Class XI student at a private school in Khoda Colony, was stabbed by his friend following an argument. The attack occurred on Thursday, and Surya succumbed to his injuries at a hospital on Friday, 28 May. His elder brother, Yash, filed a complaint at Khoda police station, leading to the registration of an FIR naming four accused.
Ghaziabad Police have since arrested three of the four named accused — Farhan, Asif, and Nawab. Farhan is reportedly the father of the main accused, Asad, who remains at large. Police teams are conducting raids to trace Asad.
Mayawati's Statement on X
Taking to social media platform X, Mayawati wrote: 'The murder of Surya Chauhan — a young man from Khoda in the Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh — is an extremely tragic and deeply concerning incident.' She urged the government and administration to take measures to prevent such incidents, which she described as 'becoming an everyday occurrence.'
She also flagged the political dimension: 'As the election season draws closer, such incidents could lead to widespread and adverse consequences. Therefore, the government must remain fully vigilant,' she warned.
Family's Grief and Demands
Surya's mother, Saroj, expressed inconsolable grief, saying she had not seen her son's face since 28 May. 'I had hoped that my younger son would become my strength, but now he has been taken away from us,' she said. She demanded the harshest punishment for the accused.
Surya's sister alleged that Asad had lured Surya under the pretext of a friendly meeting on Eid. 'We thought it was a friendly meeting and never suspected any conspiracy. However, Asad was not alone; he was accompanied by seven or eight people,' she claimed. She noted that a minor argument between Surya and Asad about eight months ago appeared to have been the trigger.
'My brother was only 17 years old. Our father is no longer with us, and now we have lost my brother too,' she said, adding that the family wants Asad arrested as soon as possible.
Background and Broader Concern
The case has drawn attention to rising incidents of youth violence in the National Capital Region (NCR) periphery. This is not an isolated incident — law-and-order concerns in Ghaziabad have periodically surfaced, and the involvement of multiple accused in what began as a personal dispute underlines the escalating nature of such confrontations. Notably, Mayawati's intervention signals that the case has acquired political salience ahead of upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh.
With the main accused still absconding, the family and political leaders are watching closely to see how swiftly the Uttar Pradesh administration responds.
