Kolkata, Feb 20 (NationPress) The Mauritius Coast Guard Ship (MCGS) Barracuda is preparing to journey back to its birthplace in Kolkata for a significant refurbishment. Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd has formalized a contract with the Government of Mauritius for this major undertaking.

The MCGS Barracuda is an Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) crafted by GRSE. It was officially commissioned at Port Louis on March 12, 2015, in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mauritian Prime Minister Anerood Jugnauth. This occasion marked a historic milestone for Mauritius' National Day, celebrated annually on this date.

As noted by a senior GRSE official, "The MCGS Barracuda was the first export warship built and delivered by an Indian shipyard. Since then, GRSE has constructed and delivered the CGS PS Zoroaster to the National Coast Guard of Seychelles. The delivery and commissioning of this Fast Patrol Vessel occurred in 2021. The CGS PS Zoroaster returned to GRSE for refits, which were completed a month ahead of schedule on May 25, 2024. This achievement garnered GRSE praise from both the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, and the National Coast Guard of Seychelles."

The official further stated that completing work ahead of schedule is part of GRSE's innovative 'Refit Project'. This initiative aims to position GRSE as a prime destination for extensive refits and ship repairs along the eastern seaboard of India. The shipyard plans to attract not only warships but also commercial vessels to utilize its advanced facilities in Kolkata.

Moreover, this initiative is a pivotal element of the Union government's strategy to enhance maritime security and support strategic island nations in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Presently, GRSE is constructing 40 platforms, including 17 warships for the Indian Navy, and also holds eight export contracts,” the official added.
