Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday, 25 August called Tripura Medical College a cornerstone of the state's healthcare infrastructure, citing surging patient footfall and expanding surgical capacity as evidence of growing public trust in the institution. He was speaking at the college's 21st Foundation Day celebrations held at its campus on the outskirts of Agartala.

Key Developments at the Foundation Day Event

Chief Minister Saha inaugurated two facilities at the event: a blood donation camp and a Nature-cum-Smart Lecture Hall in the college's academic building. The programme was attended by senior officials including Health Department Secretary Kiran Gitte, Society for Tripura Medical College Chairman Promthesh Roy, Chief Executive Officer Swapan Saha, Principal Arindam Dutta, Professor A.K. Chakma, and Medical Superintendent Jayant Poddar.

Saha, who holds the Health portfolio in addition to the Chief Minister's office and is himself a dental surgeon who once taught at the college, expressed a personal connection to the institution. 'Tripura Medical College is continuously striving to provide healthcare services at par with the state's main referral hospital, GBP Hospital,' he said.

Healthcare Numbers That Tell the Story

Saha cited figures covering the period from August 2024 to July 2025 to underscore the hospital's workload. During this window, approximately 3.65 lakh patients visited the Out-Patient Department (OPD). The hospital performed 4,831 major surgeries and 18,292 minor surgeries. Additionally, 2,536 patients received dialysis services, while 122 patients underwent colonoscopy. 'These statistics indicate the important role being played by this hospital in providing healthcare services to the people of the state,' he said.

Founded in 2005, Tripura Medical College and Dr B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Teaching Hospital is a government-backed institution run by a registered society. It currently offers 150 MBBS seats and 18 postgraduate seats, with Saha indicating both figures would rise in the near future.

Tripura's Broader Healthcare Expansion Push

The Chief Minister outlined a wider infrastructure drive underway across the state. Bed capacity at GBP Hospital — the state's primary referral centre — has been increased. Dedicated infrastructure for maternal and child health has been created, and free-time OPDs have been introduced at main and district hospitals. Agartala Civil Hospital has also been recently launched.

Notably, the foundation stone for a private medical college at Ambassa, the headquarters of Dhalai district, was laid on Monday. A tertiary eye hospital adjacent to ILS Hospital is also in the pipeline. Saha said that a dental college has already been established during the current government's tenure, and that teaching at Homeopathic and Ayurvedic Medical Colleges would commence soon.

What This Signals for the Northeast

Tripura's push to add multiple medical institutions within a short span reflects a broader ambition to position the state as a healthcare hub in the northeastern region. This comes amid a national trend of tier-2 and tier-3 states investing heavily in medical education capacity following pandemic-era gaps in healthcare access. For a state that has historically depended on referrals to Kolkata and other metros, building local tertiary capacity carries both economic and public health significance.

With new institutions in the pipeline and seat capacity set to expand, the pace at which these projects are executed will determine whether Tripura's healthcare ambitions translate into measurable outcomes for its residents.
