Shillong, May 26 (NationPress) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma unveiled multiple significant initiatives aimed at promoting Climate Action and Climate Adaptation objectives in Meghalaya at Mendipathar in the North Garo Hills region.
He revealed the plaques for various projects in the company of PHE Minister Marcuise Marak, Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh, and MLAs Marthon Sangma and Rupert Momin, which included the inauguration of two newly constructed hostels - the Girl’s Hostel at Mendipathar and the Tribal Hostel at Resubelpara.
Sangma announced that the Climate Adaptive Community-Based Water Harvesting Project, funded by the ADB, is a project worth over Rs 500 crore that will be executed in all districts of Meghalaya to improve water resilience and sustainability. Additionally, he launched the ‘Megh Adapt Pay’, a project costing Rs 47.19 crore, which is part of the broader water harvesting initiative focusing on afforestation, conservation of existing forests, and agricultural land development under the Soil and Water Conservation Department.
The Chief Minister emphasized that this project aims to create a partnership between the community and the government to protect forests, restore degraded lands, enhance ecosystem health, rehabilitate degraded catchment areas, and increase green cover throughout the state. The Girls’ Hostel at Mendipathar College, built at a cost of Rs 3 crore, will function on a not-for-profit basis and will be managed by the Awe Self-Help Group (SHG), while the Tribal Girls’ Hostel at Resubelpara, constructed for Rs 2.5 crore, will be overseen by Ramke Memorial School.
“These hostels are designed to provide a safe, secure, and supportive living environment for girls, particularly those from remote regions, enabling them to pursue education without hindrance,” the Chief Minister remarked. He also expressed satisfaction over the improved pass percentage in the SSLC exam and noted that the supplementary exam results raised the percentage to 96 per cent, the highest in the Northeast and possibly the best in the country.
Sangma addressed criticisms regarding the ‘CM Impact’ guidebook, stating, “Many speak wrongly about it, but just ask the students and parents. Previously, numerous individuals relied on guidebooks for the SSLC and other examinations, and CM Impact is an initiative to aid students who lack access to such resources. I am profoundly pleased that our children have succeeded in the SSLC exam. The guidebook has been immensely helpful. Congratulations to all the students who passed,” he added.
