New Delhi, Nov 7 (NationPress) After making history by qualifying for her inaugural able-bodied international competition, Paralympic medallist archer Sheetal Devi shared her thoughts on this significant achievement. She emphasized that through learning from every obstacle, she has realized her ambition to compete alongside able-bodied athletes.

The 18-year-old para-archer secured her spot in the junior archery team for the Asia Cup Stage 3 in Jeddah next month, finishing third in the final women’s compound rankings during the four-day national selection trials held in Sonipat.

For Sheetal, who was born without arms due to a rare congenital condition known as phocomelia, this accomplishment represents the fulfillment of a long-cherished dream.

“When I began competing, I had a modest vision - to eventually compete alongside able-bodied individuals and secure medals. Initially, I faced challenges, but I persevered, learning from each setback,” Sheetal expressed on X.

“Now, that vision is within reach. In the Asia Cup trials, I achieved Rank 3 and will represent India in the able-bodied category of the Asia Cup. Dreams require time, effort, belief, and persistence,” Sheetal stated.

The armless archer from Jammu and Kashmir, who aims for a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, celebrated her first world title at the World Archery Para Championships in Gwangju, Korea, where she won gold in the women’s individual compound event.

In addition to her individual gold, she also earned silver and bronze medals in the compound women’s team and compound mixed team events, respectively.

Her previous major triumph occurred at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games, where she secured gold in the compound women’s category, marking her first international title, along with a mixed team bronze with Rakesh Kumar. She subsequently won silver at the Pilsen 2023 World Archery Para Championships, solidifying her status among the world's elite.
