Shillong, Jan 21 (NationPress) Uniting 3,500 athletes from 29 distinct sports across all 12 districts of Meghalaya, the 6th Edition of Meghalaya Games was officially inaugurated at the Wahiajer Stadium in Jowai by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.
This premier annual multi-sport event highlights Meghalaya’s athletic capabilities and its preparedness to host national-level contests, particularly with the 2027 National Games approaching.
In addition, the Meghalaya Games 2025 will include three traditional sports: Mawpoin, Rah Moo Khrah, and An’Ding Oka, showcasing the state’s dedication to safeguarding and promoting its indigenous sports.
While addressing a full stadium, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma emphasized that these games signify more than just competition; they represent the government’s commitment to its youth.
He remarked, “We have consistently communicated that our youth are a crucial aspect of our policymaking; they influence the schemes we implement and the initiatives of this government. This event and the previous four during our administration exemplify our dedication to empowering our youth. We ensure these games are rotated to recognize the unique strengths of every region.”
Sangma further asserted that all regions and districts should be fostered and given opportunities to host such events.
“With today’s event, significant infrastructure improvements have occurred in the Jowai area and throughout the West Jaintia Hills. This includes road enhancements, building renovations, and the construction of substantial stadiums like this one,” he stated.
Notably, for the first time, the Meghalaya Games will host seven para-athletes—four women and three men—who will participate in the para-shooting event (both pistol and rifle categories). The state anthem resonated, followed by an exhilarating athlete parade, symbolizing the unity and resilient spirit of Meghalaya’s youth.
A special moment of the evening included the performance of the Games’ theme song, “Niom Beit Naphang”. The official mascot, “U Kiang,” inspired by the clouded leopard and honoring the legendary freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah, served as a touching tribute to Meghalaya’s rich cultural heritage and unwavering spirit.
In the meantime, Minister of Sports & Youth Affairs, Shakliar Warjri, underscored the transformative influence of sports within Meghalaya, expressing gratitude to everyone who played a role in bringing the Meghalaya Games to fruition.
He mentioned that beyond the aspects of winning and losing, events like this provide a platform for individuals to explore various areas of the state for the first time; similar to how the 6th edition of the Games has encouraged many to visit Jaintia Hills for the first time.
