Srinagar, Sep 19 (NationPress) Mehbooba Mufti, the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and president of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), announced on Friday that she has sent a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah urging him to reassess the situation of imprisoned JKLF leader Yasin Malik through a ‘humanitarian lens’.
This appeal from Mehbooba Mufti comes at a pivotal moment, coinciding with media reports that reference Yasin Malik's affidavit submitted to the Delhi High Court, where he claims to have renounced violence and met with terrorist leader Hafiz Saeed upon the advice of the then Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh.
In his affidavit, Malik stated that he received gratitude from Manmohan Singh for choosing non-violence and engaging in a peaceful separatist struggle.
Mehbooba Mufti expressed on X, “I’ve written to Shri Amit Shah ji to view Yasin Malik’s case through a humanitarian lens. While I differ with his political ideology, one cannot ignore the courage it took him to renounce violence and choose the path of political engagement and non-violent dissent.”
In her detailed mercy appeal to Amit Shah, Mehbooba Mufti emphasized, “I earnestly appeal to your esteemed office for a compassionate and urgent review of the case of Yasin Malik -- a name that once symbolized resistance, later chose restraint and now remains silenced behind prison walls.”
She elaborated on Malik's significant transformation, highlighting the trust he placed in the state by abandoning violence to pursue political engagement. “His story is not simple, as no story born out of conflict ever is. Yet what matters most is the profound transformation he undertook,” her letter stated.
Currently, Yasin Malik is serving a life sentence following his conviction in a terror funding case by the NIA court.
The NIA has also appealed to the high court for the imposition of a death sentence in this case.
In addition, he is on trial for the murder of four IAF personnel in the Rawalpora area of Srinagar on January 25, 1990, including Squadron Leader Ravi Khanna. Recently, an eyewitness identified Malik as the shooter in this long-standing case.
This incident forms part of the numerous charges against Malik, including his involvement in the abduction of Rubaiya Sayeed, the daughter of former Union Home Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed.
