Bhopal, June 28 (NationPress) The highly awaited Aishbagh Railway Overbridge (ROB) in Bhopal, designed to alleviate traffic issues post the closure of an essential railway crossing, has ignited a storm of controversy due to the discovery of a perilously sharp 90-degree turn in its architecture.
The government of Madhya Pradesh has swiftly intervened, suspending eight engineers from the Public Works Department (PWD), including two Chief Engineers, while also launching a departmental investigation against a retired Superintending Engineer.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav revealed these disciplinary actions late Saturday night through a post on X, confirming his awareness of the situation and the initiation of an inquiry.
The investigation, overseen by PWD Minister Rakesh Singh and conducted by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), uncovered significant flaws in the bridge's design and execution.
The NHAI report identified the 90-degree turn as a critical safety concern, advising that vehicles should maintain speeds of no more than 35–40 kmph while navigating this curve. Exceeding this speed, the report cautioned, could result in serious accidents.
Spanning 648 meters and costing Rs 18 crore, the bridge was initially set to be completed within 18 months of its launch in May 2022. However, due to delays and design issues, its inauguration has been postponed. This flaw has not only incited criticism from engineers and safety specialists but also led to a surge of memes and mockery across social media platforms.
Images showcasing the bridge's abrupt L-shaped turn have gained traction online, with users comparing it to video game tracks and questioning how vehicles can safely navigate such a sharp bend without risking collisions.
Railway authorities had previously voiced concerns regarding the 90-degree turn during the planning stages, but PWD engineers attributed these issues to space limitations and the proximity of a metro station.
