Kolkata, June 28 (NationPress) Following criticism on Saturday from the Trinamool Congress-led West Bengal government regarding his remarks about the alleged rape of a law student on the college grounds in Kasba, Kolkata earlier this week, party legislator Madan Mitra has asserted that his words were quoted out of context.
Mitra, known for his often controversial statements, suggested that the rape incident conveyed a message to young women advising them against attending college when it is closed, as someone might call them there under false pretenses.
In response to his remarks, the Trinamool Congress released a statement clarifying that Mitra's comments were made in his personal capacity and that the party strongly disassociated itself from his statements, condemning them.
Subsequently, Mitra took to his official X account to deny any intention of protecting those responsible for the recent rape case involving the law student in Kasba.
He argued that his statement was misinterpreted and exploited by a group with ulterior motives, aiming to tarnish the image of the Trinamool Congress by distorting his words for their agenda.
"While I demand the strongest action against the culprits, which the police have already taken in the Kasba incident, I categorically deny any intention to shield them. I believe my statement has been completely misrepresented by a motivated faction aiming to damage our party's reputation, AITC," Mitra expressed.
He added that throughout his extensive political career, he has acted in a manner that is generally favored by the majority, aside from a few dissenters with personal grievances.
"After reviewing the AITC statement, I urge my party leadership not to misinterpret my intentions. I am willing to undergo any inquiry to clarify my comments in person. I trust that my party will deliberate carefully before proceeding with any further actions in this matter," the statement concluded.
