Bengaluru, Nov 13 (NationPress) The Congress-led government in Karnataka has formally announced a paid menstrual leave policy, allowing women employees in registered establishments to take one day off each month.
The Menstrual Leave Policy – 2025, which recently garnered cabinet approval under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's leadership, is designed to enhance women's health and empowerment.
This initiative adds to the array of welfare measures already in place by the state government aimed at supporting women.
Labour Minister Santosh S. Lad emphasized that this policy is a significant step towards safeguarding women's health and mental wellness in the workplace.
“This initiative represents a groundbreaking move towards women’s empowerment, aiming to set a precedent for the nation. I sincerely thank Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and all cabinet members for their unwavering support in realizing this essential initiative,” he stated.
Previously, the Labour Department sought administrative clearance to roll out the menstrual leave policy. Minister Santosh S. Lad insisted on a thorough and effective implementation, leading to numerous meetings, discussions, and consultations.
To evaluate the initiative, an 18-member committee was formed, led by Prof. Sapna S., Head of the Department of Law at Christ University. The committee's report acknowledged menstrual health as a vital component of women’s rights and workplace welfare. Following this, the cabinet granted final approval for the policy's enactment.
Minister Santosh S. Lad was instrumental in the realization of the menstrual leave benefit, consistently advocating for women-friendly policies through the Labour Department.
He also conducted an extensive review of menstrual leave practices across various Indian states and countries to ensure a well-structured implementation in Karnataka, according to the Labour Ministry's statement.
“After the cabinet's initial approval of the menstrual leave policy, women employees statewide expressed their gratitude to Minister Santosh S. Lad. The Labour Department’s initiative has received widespread acclaim from women across various sectors. The long-awaited demand of women employees has now been fulfilled, marking a significant and forward-thinking step towards safeguarding women’s health and promoting empowerment. This decision has not only delighted women workers but also positively impacted their families,” the Labour Ministry's statement added.
