Aizawl, April 2 (NationPress) The Assam Rifles personnel have intercepted a substantial quantity of highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, worth over Rs 12.54 crore, in Mizoram on Wednesday, according to officials.
A defence representative stated that, acting on confidential intelligence, the paramilitary forces conducted operations in the Bualpui region of Lawngtlai district and confiscated 42,000 methamphetamine tablets, commonly referred to as Yaba or party tablets.
The Lawngtlai district has unguarded borders with both Bangladesh and Myanmar.
The drugs, which were smuggled in from Myanmar, have been forwarded to the Bualpui Police Station.
This seizure marks the second significant drug recovery from the Lawngtlai district within a week's time.
On March 25, the Assam Rifles achieved a notable triumph in combating drug trafficking, in a collaborative effort with officials from the Excise and Narcotics Department, seizing 50,000 methamphetamine tablets valued at Rs 15 crore.
The drugs, also smuggled from Myanmar, were found in Bualpui in Lawngtlai, resulting in the arrest of a 53-year-old Myanmarese national from Lungrang village in the adjacent Hakha district.
The Chin state of Myanmar serves as a primary hub for drug trafficking through six districts of Mizoram - Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip. Champhai is particularly notorious for the smuggling of various drugs, foreign cigarettes, areca nuts, arms and ammunition, as well as exotic animals and their body parts. These illicit drugs predominantly enter India from Myanmar via illegal border routes in Mizoram and Manipur, subsequently being transported to other northeastern and Indian states, in addition to neighboring countries, especially Bangladesh.
Mizoram shares a 510 km and a 318 km unprotected border with Myanmar and Bangladesh, respectively.
