Thiruvananthapuram, December 18 (NationPress) - The Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, vehemently condemned the Union government on Thursday for advancing a Bill in the Lok Sabha that he claims jeopardizes the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). He labeled this action as unjustifiable and anti-people.
In a social media post, Vijayan accused the Sangh Parivar-led Union government of effectively challenging the interests of farmers, agricultural workers, and the rural impoverished population across the nation through these proposed modifications.
He asserted that the changes in the scheme's name and structure are part of a larger ideological strategy, indicating that the initiative shows a fear of even the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.
The Chief Minister criticized the Centre for shirking its constitutional duty to provide employment while transferring a significant financial burden onto the states.
He expressed grave concerns regarding a clause in the Bill that permits the suspension of the scheme for up to 60 days during peak agricultural periods, calling it disastrous and detrimental to rural livelihoods.
Vijayan also condemned the government for disregarding calls from the Opposition to send the Bill to a Joint Parliamentary Committee or a Select Committee for comprehensive examination.
He highlighted that even members of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have voiced worries about the Bill, yet the Union government remains obstinate in its stance.
The Chief Minister claimed that this recent initiative is part of a prolonged attempt by the NDA administration to undermine MGNREGS.
Since taking office, he noted, the Centre has persistently cut budget allocations for the scheme and implemented measures that weaken its effectiveness, all while now trying to dismantle the program entirely.
Vijayan characterized this strategy as a complete abandonment of the Union government's constitutional obligation to ensure employment. He reminisced that MGNREGS was established during the first UPA government's term, largely due to pressure from the Left.
He urged that any previous hesitance from the Congress regarding the implementation of the scheme should now be set aside.
The Chief Minister called for a robust public response against the Union government’s actions, cautioning that any weakening of MGNREGS could lead to serious repercussions for rural employment, social security, and the financial stability of states.
