An inter-factional armed clash between two rival wings of a militant outfit left one militant dead and six others injured in Manipur's Noney district on Sunday, 30 August, while a separate grenade attack targeted a petrol pump in Thoubal district the previous evening, officials confirmed. The twin incidents underscore the volatile security environment in the northeastern state, where multiple armed groups continue to operate.

The Noney Gunfight

A heavy exchange of fire broke out between cadres of the Zeliangrong United Front-Kamson (ZUF-K) and the Zeliangrong United Front-Jenchui (ZUF-J) factions in Noney district, according to a police official. A self-styled second lieutenant of ZUF-J, identified as Jangailing Gonmei, 29, sustained bullet injuries during the clash and was subsequently pronounced dead. Six other ZUF-J cadres were also wounded in the gunfight and were shifted to a hospital, where their condition was described as stable.

The whereabouts and condition of the remaining militants involved in the clash were still being ascertained by authorities, officials said.

Grenade Attack on Thoubal Petrol Pump

In a separate incident on Saturday evening, unidentified assailants arrived by car and hurled a grenade at a petrol pump in Thoubal district. The device exploded near an oil tanker parked within the pump premises. No casualties were reported in the blast.

Police have launched an investigation and are reviewing CCTV footage from the site to identify and trace the attackers, officials said.

KYKL Militants Arrested in Kakching

In a third development, a joint team of Manipur Police and Assam Rifles arrested two alleged members of the Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) outfit from Kakching district. The arrested individuals were identified as Yumnam Rohenjit Meitei alias Akui, 26, and Shakachand Yumnam alias Chand, 26. Both were allegedly involved in extortion activities, officials said.

Security personnel recovered two empty INSAS rifle magazines, 27 live INSAS rounds, a BAOFENG handset, two slings, a bulletproof jacket with a single plate, a pair of tactical boots, and a magazine pouch from their possession. Further investigation is underway.

Broader Security Context

The incidents reflect the persistent fragmentation of armed groups in Manipur, where inter-factional rivalry — not just state-militant confrontations — has become a recurring feature of violence. Notably, the ZUF split into competing factions has previously triggered localised clashes in the hill districts. The KYKL arrests, meanwhile, point to continued security force operations against extortion networks that fund militant activity across the state. All three incidents are under active investigation.
