Lucknow Falcons secured their place in the UP T20 League 2026 playoffs on 30 August, defeating the Gaur Gorakhpur Lions by 24 runs in match 26 at Green Park Stadium, Kanpur. The result — Lucknow's fifth win from nine outings — makes them the second franchise to advance to the knockout stage, after the Meerut Mavericks.

A Recovery Act for the Ages

The evening began disastrously for the Falcons. Choosing to bat, they were reduced to a precarious 51/4 in 8.4 overs under sustained pressure from Lions skipper Shivam Sharma, who delivered a miserly spell of 2/12 in three overs, including a maiden. With the innings in tatters, captain Bhuvneshwar Kumar admitted the dressing room had dramatically lowered its sights.

'It was very satisfying because we didn't really get the start we wanted,' Bhuvneshwar said. 'During the 10-over break, our honest aim was to reach around 100 runs by the 15th over and add another 40 to 50 runs in the final five. Sitting in the dressing room, we thought even 130 to 140 would be a fighting total.'

The Verma–Singh Partnership That Changed Everything

What followed was a 109-run stand off just 64 balls between Ajeet Verma and Kritagya Singh — the kind of partnership that transforms a near-certain defeat into a commanding win. Verma remained unbeaten on 75 off 45 balls, hitting eight boundaries and three sixes, while Singh contributed a vital 44 off 31 balls. Together, they lifted the Falcons to 170/5 in 20 overs.

'The maturity shown by Ajeet and Kritagya was excellent,' Bhuvneshwar noted. 'That partnership was something we had been lacking in the tournament so far. The way we batted, we did much better than what we had expected. That partnership is the reason we are in this winning position today.'

The skipper singled out Verma for particular praise, acknowledging the youngster had earned his place on merit. 'He has made a massive impact. His batting has been so impressive that we had to bring him into the playing XI. It shows that when a youngster performs well, the entire team benefits,' Bhuvneshwar said.

Bowling Unit Shuts the Door

Defending 170, Lucknow's bowlers were clinical from the outset. Abhinandan Singh removed openers Abhay Pratap Singh and Aryan Chaudhary cheaply, and the Lions were reeling at 70/5 in 10.3 overs after Akshu Bajwa claimed two wickets and Vipraj Nigam took one.

A 56-run stand off 40 balls between Prince Yadav (49 off 36) and Parth Palawat threatened to reopen the contest, with 45 runs still required from the final 18 deliveries. Bhuvneshwar turned to Abhinandan for the crucial 18th over — a decision that proved decisive. Abhinandan dismissed the well-set Yadav on the very first ball, and a run-out on the fourth delivery ended Palawat's resistance. Abhinandan finished with 3/32.

Bhuvneshwar himself dismissed Shivam Sharma in the penultimate over, before Nigam wrapped up the tail in the final over to finish with 3/17. The Lions were bowled out for 146, falling 24 runs short.

'Combined with the way we bowled, it was a very complete performance from us,' Bhuvneshwar said after the match. With qualification secured, Lucknow now set their sights on the business end of the tournament, carrying the momentum of a complete team effort into the knockouts.
