Kollam (Kerala), Nov 26 (NationPress) Kerala's cooperative dairy sector is experiencing remarkable growth, as Milma has announced a 14 percent increase in milk procurement from April to September. This notable rise indicates a strengthening of farmer engagement and growing consumer demand, as highlighted by a state Minister.

This announcement was made during the state-level National Milk Day celebrations, which were inaugurated by Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Minister J. Chinchurani.

She emphasized Milma's essential role in providing financial stability for dairy farmers, pointing out that the cooperative has consistently reinvested in the dairy sector.

"In the previous financial year, Milma returned 92.5 percent of its profits to farmers through various welfare programs and incentives. By offering incentives, cattle subsidies, and welfare initiatives, Milma has prioritized the welfare of dairy farmers," she stated.

Starting as a modest cooperative, Milma has transformed into a Rs 4,327 crore enterprise.

The organization now procures 1.25 million litres of milk daily and sells approximately 1.65 million litres, showcasing the sector's expanding commercial influence.

Milma is also venturing into value-added dairy segments, with leadership focusing on product diversification and aspirations for international markets.

Milma Chairman K.S. Mani remarked that India's dairy sector continues to embody the visionary model of Dr. Verghese Kurien, whose birth anniversary is celebrated as National Milk Day.

"Milma's value-added products are capable of competing on a global scale, and regional unions have initiated efforts to enhance distribution through cooperative societies," he mentioned, outlining plans to broaden reach and market share.

State Planning Board Vice Chairperson Prof. V.K. Ramachandran advocated for honoring Dr. Kurien with the Bharat Ratna, recognizing his contributions to democratizing dairy entrepreneurship and promoting cooperative-led professional growth.

He underscored the importance of improving quality in breeding, nutrition, and animal health, while also emphasizing women's economic empowerment within the sector.

Regional cooperative leaders noted that welfare-driven policy interventions have significantly enhanced procurement statewide, with initiatives underway to promote small-scale farm development and localized dairy programs.

With Milma aiming to capture both domestic and international markets, Kerala appears to be on the brink of achieving self-sufficiency in milk production, supported by its cooperative-driven model.
