Yoga Day 2026: Ministries mark 12th IDY with healthy ageing focus
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Several Union ministries and their affiliated bodies on 21 June 2026 observed the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) across New Delhi, with events centred on this year's global theme, 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing' — underscoring yoga's role in promoting physical vitality, mental well-being, and longevity across all age groups.
MNRE Leads Session at Sunder Nursery
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), in association with its public sector undertakings Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd. (IREDA) and Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd. (SECI), organised a common yoga session at Sunder Nursery, New Delhi. The programme was led by Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary, MNRE, who described yoga as a way of life and urged employees to make it a daily practice — whether at home or at the office — for sustained mental and physical well-being. A large number of participants attended the session, reflecting growing institutional recognition of yoga as a pillar of preventive healthcare.
Civil Aviation Ministry Calls for Year-Round Practice
The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), in collaboration with the Airports Authority of India (AAI), also marked the occasion. Samir Kumar Sinha, Secretary, Civil Aviation, urged participants to look beyond a single day of observance. 'Yoga, pranayama, and meditation should be integral to our daily routines,' Sinha said. 'Dedicating time to these practices each day contributes significantly to improved health, enhanced energy, greater discipline, and a balanced lifestyle,' he added.
Broad Ministerial Participation Across the Capital
The 12th IDY 2026 was observed by a wide cross-section of the Union government, including the Ministry of Rural Development, Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Personnel and Training, Ministry of External Affairs, and the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser, Government of India. Rohit Kansal, Secretary, Department of Rural Development, led his department's participation alongside senior officers, encouraging staff to adopt yoga as part of their daily routine for a healthier and more productive working life.
Why the 'Healthy Ageing' Theme Resonates
This year's global theme — chosen by the United Nations — aligns with mounting public health concerns around non-communicable diseases and an ageing global population. For India, where the 60-plus population is projected to exceed 34 crore by 2050 according to demographic estimates, integrating preventive wellness practices into institutional culture carries particular relevance. The broad ministerial participation on Sunday signals a concerted push to embed yoga beyond ceremonial observance and into everyday workplace culture. As government bodies wrap up this year's events, the emphasis from multiple secretaries on daily practice — rather than annual ritual — suggests IDY is gradually shifting from a symbolic calendar event to a sustained public health initiative.
