Bhubaneswar, April 23 (NationPress) Three minors have been taken into custody by law enforcement for reportedly strangulating a fellow student to death at a private residential college hostel in the Keonjhar district of Odisha, as per an official statement on Wednesday.
A senior police official informed IANS that the detained minors were presented before the Child Welfare Committee in Keonjhar on Wednesday, which subsequently placed them in an observation home located in Rourkela, Jharsuguda district.
The victim, a 15-year-old identified as Jaladhara Mahanta, hailed from Tangarapada village in the Champua block of Keonjhar district.
Following his success in the Class 10 board examinations, Jaladhara enrolled in a summer coaching program at a private residential college in the Dhangarpada area under the jurisdiction of Town Police in Keonjhar district approximately 15 days prior.
Jaladhara resided in the hostel of the aforementioned private college.
In the early hours of Tuesday, around 2 a.m., another student who went to retrieve water from a purifier near Jaladhara’s room was taken aback to discover him unconscious on a bed.
Upon receiving the alert, the college management promptly transported the victim to the Keonjhar District Headquarters Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him dead upon arrival.
During their investigation, police learned that one of the accused, who served as the monitor during the summer class, had conflicts with Jaladhara, as the latter often disregarded the former's instructions.
This same accused held resentment towards Jaladhara for making derogatory remarks about him a few days earlier.
The accused and the victim engaged in a heated dispute over various matters on Monday night, and in a moment of anger, the accused students covered Jaladhara with a blanket and subsequently strangulated him to death using a napkin.
