Bhubaneswar, Aug 4 (NationPress) Two students have been detained in Balasore district of Odisha for allegedly facilitating the suicide of a 20-year-old student from FM Autonomous College, who tragically died by self-immolation last month. The arrests occurred late Sunday night by the Crime Branch of the Odisha Police, amidst a growing public outcry regarding this high-profile case.
The individuals apprehended have been named as Shubhra Sambit Nayak, the state joint secretary of a student organization, and Jyotiprakash Biswal, a fellow student from the same college.
The Crime Branch indicated that both suspects face charges of criminal conspiracy and abetment to suicide.
According to reports, the victim had been peacefully protesting outside her college since July 1, and was allegedly encouraged by a group of students to take this drastic action.
Shockingly, there are claims that certain individuals present not only recorded videos of the incident but also aided in the suicide attempt instead of stepping in to help.
Jyotiprakash, who reportedly got injured while attempting to save the victim during the event, had been receiving treatment at SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack and has since been discharged.
Both arrested students have been presented before the SDJM Court, which has ordered them to 14 days of judicial custody. The Crime Branch has stated that the investigation is still underway, with potential for further arrests or developments.
Previously in this case, Samira Kumar Sahoo, an assistant professor at the college, and former principal Dillip Ghose were also taken into custody. The student had earlier lodged several complaints accusing Sahoo of sexual harassment and threats to alter her academic performance.
Despite her persistent calls for action, she continued her protest for nearly two weeks before tragically setting herself ablaze on July 12 outside the college gates—an act captured on CCTV and widely shared, igniting public anger.
The victim suffered severe burns, with 90 percent of her body affected, and was admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where she succumbed to her injuries on July 15.
