Bhubaneswar, Aug 4 (NationPress) Political tensions surged in Odisha on Monday following the late-night apprehension of two student leaders linked to the tragic incident involving an FM College student who attempted self-immolation near the principal’s office in Balasore on July 12, allegedly due to sexual harassment by a faculty member.
The young woman, who suffered over 90% burn injuries, tragically passed away during treatment at Bhawanipatna AIIMS.
After a span of 22 days post the incident, the suspects, identified as Subhra Sambit Nayak and Jyoti Prakash Biswal, were detained late Sunday night by the Crime Branch under charges of criminal conspiracy and abetment of suicide.
The Opposition party, Biju Janata Dal, criticized the Odisha government and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which is reportedly associated with the arrested students, following their apprehension.
During a press conference, BJD MLA Goutam Buddha Das accused the ABVP of orchestrating a conspiracy to manipulate the tragic incident for electoral gain ahead of the upcoming college elections, claiming the organization lacks significant presence in Odisha’s colleges.
Das also implicated BJP leaders as the masterminds behind this unfortunate event, asserting that the FM College student’s demise was a consequence of this conspiracy.
In response, ABVP vehemently condemned the midnight arrests, labeling them a politically motivated act. “The police's actions reflect a deep political conspiracy,” stated the organization in a press release.
The ABVP further claimed that the alleged sexual harassment by the Head of Department, Samir Kumar Sahu, and character attacks on social media by BJD and Congress student leaders contributed significantly to the distress that led the FM College student to her tragic decision.
They criticized the Odisha Police for not taking action against the implicated BJD and Congress student leaders.
