Aizawl, Nov 11 (NationPress) An impressive 56.35% voter turnout has been noted by 1 p.m. during the by-election for Mizoram’s Dampa Assembly constituency on Tuesday, according to officials.
An election official reported that no significant incidents have occurred since the voting commenced at 7 a.m. across the 41 polling stations within the Dampa Assembly segment situated in Mamit.
Polling will proceed uninterrupted in this diverse Assembly constituency in Mamit district until 4 p.m. The official indicated that in the by-election for the Dampa Assembly Constituency (designated for tribal candidates), webcasting was implemented in 40 out of 41 polling stations, except for the Zopui station where network issues hindered the process.
Three polling stations in the constituency have been classified as critical, prompting an increased deployment of security personnel. In total, 20,790 voters, including 10,185 women, are eligible to vote and determine the electoral outcome for five different candidates.
The Dampa Assembly seat became vacant following the passing of Opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) legislator Lalrintluanga Sailo on July 21.
This Assembly segment, which has an unfenced border with Bangladesh and an interstate border with Tripura, is home to a significant minority population, including members of the Chakma and Reang tribal groups.
Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) members have been stationed at polling sites and nearby border regions to uphold order and security.
This by-election features a five-cornered contest, with the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) putting forth Mizo singer and preacher Vanlalsailova, while the Opposition MNF has selected its Vice-President and former Health Minister R. Lalthangliana.
The Congress party has chosen its State Vice-President and former Transport Minister John Rotluangliana, whereas the BJP has nominated Lalhmingthanga.
Former Chief Minister Brigadier T. Sailo’s party, the People’s Conference, has put forward its Vice-President K. Zahmingthanga.
The Mizoram Election Department stated that, adhering to the guidelines from the Election Commission concerning election conduct, all presiding officers, polling staff, sector officers, and security personnel involved in the by-election are required to remain alert and ensure the election is conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful manner.
They have also been instructed to take prompt and suitable measures in response to any violations of election regulations or polling day offenses that might arise during the voting process, as mentioned in the statement.
Robust security protocols have been established for the by-election, overseen by state police nodal officer H. Ramthlengliana, Inspector General of Police (Headquarters and Law & Order).
Vote counting is scheduled for November 14.
