Aizawl, Jan 25 (NationPress) The flow of goods-laden trucks and various vehicles on National Highway-6 resumed on Saturday after two truck associations in Mizoram decided to end their protest against the deplorable condition of the crucial Aizawl-Silchar National Highway, as reported by officials.

Following the assurances from the state government regarding highway repairs, the truckers’ association called off their strike. This highway serves as the primary route for transporting food grains, essential supplies, medicines, and fuel from other parts of the country via Assam.

The leaders from both the Mizoram Truck Owners' Association (MTOA) and Mizoram Truck Drivers' Association (MTDA) mentioned that the strike was lifted because the government committed to addressing the most severely affected sections of the roads.

Truck operations had been halted since Thursday for vehicles transporting essential goods, food grains, and construction materials. However, oil tankers and those carrying cooking gas from Assam continued their operations. The segments of the highway between Sairang/Khamrang near Aizawl and Vairengte near the Assam border were significantly damaged due to heavy rainfall during last year's monsoon season.

A representative from MTOA indicated that state officials had previously promised to improve the roads during winter, but no action was taken until after the agitation began.

Meanwhile, engineers from the Public Works Department (PWD) reported that repair work on certain highway sections between Sairang and Vairengte is progressing rapidly. The state government has allocated Rs 75 lakh for these repairs.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) had announced that some repair work on the National Highway would be handled by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), while other sections would be managed by the state PWD.
