Assam Rifles personnel conducted two major anti-smuggling operations in Mizoram on 25 May, recovering narcotics and gold collectively valued at approximately ₹6.75 crore and apprehending three individuals, according to a defence official statement. The operations were carried out in coordination with state police and customs authorities.

Drug Bust in Champhai District

Acting on specific intelligence inputs about narcotics trafficking in the Zokhawthar area of Champhai district, Assam Rifles troops launched a joint operation alongside the state police. The team intercepted a Toyota Glanza suspected of carrying contraband.

A thorough search of the vehicle yielded 2.201 kg of methamphetamine tablets — commonly known as Yaba or 'party tablets' — valued at approximately ₹6.60 crore. Two smugglers allegedly involved in transporting the narcotics were arrested on the spot. The contraband, the vehicle, and the accused were handed over to Zokhawthar Police Station for further investigation and legal proceedings.

Gold Seizure in Aizawl District

In a separate operation, Assam Rifles troops, acting on intelligence about illegal gold transportation in the Chawnpui area of Aizawl district, coordinated with the Customs Preventive Force, Aizawl, to intercept a suspect.

One individual — a resident of the Zotlang area in Aizawl district — was apprehended while allegedly attempting to deliver the contraband on a two-wheeler. A search recovered 104 grams of 22-carat gold valued at around ₹15 lakh from his possession. The recovered gold and the accused were handed over to the Customs Preventive Force for further legal action.

Mizoram's Role as a Smuggling Corridor

The operations underscore the persistent challenge Mizoram poses for security forces. The state's Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip districts share a combined 510-km border with Myanmar's Chin state, which has emerged as a significant hub for smuggling narcotics, exotic wildlife, and other contraband into India's northeastern states.

Mizoram's long, largely unfenced borders with both Myanmar and Bangladesh have made it one of the most active drug trafficking corridors in Northeast India. Among the most frequently seized substances are methamphetamine tablets and heroin originating from Myanmar. Yaba tablets — a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine — are strictly prohibited in India and carry severe legal penalties.

Assam Rifles' Continued Commitment

The official statement noted that the twin recoveries reflect the Assam Rifles' sustained efforts to curb illegal smuggling and maintain a secure environment across Mizoram. The force reiterated its commitment to upholding law and order and protecting residents of the region.

With smuggling networks along the Myanmar border reportedly growing more sophisticated, security analysts expect operations of this nature to intensify in the coming months.
