Aizawl, March 13 (NationPress) The vibrant spring festival of Chapchar Kut 2026 was celebrated with immense zeal and cultural richness in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, on Friday. Chief Minister Lalduhoma emphasized the importance of harmony and unity among the citizens during this festive occasion.

Chapchar Kut, the most cherished festival of the Mizo people, takes place in spring after the jhum cutting phase, which is the first step in their traditional slash-and-burn agricultural method.

This festival signifies the transition from winter to spring, representing a time of renewal in both nature and human life. Individuals from various age groups and genders come together to partake in the celebrations.

Young men and women, donned in their colorful traditional attire, engage in traditional dances, often extending the festivities late into the night.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma served as the Kut Pa (Chief Guest) for the event, while Art and Culture Minister C. Lalsawivunga hosted it as the Kut Thlengtu.

The Governor of Mizoram, V. K. Singh (Retd.), also graced the occasion with his presence. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Zo Nun Ze Mawi – Inremna,” which translates to “The Beauty of Zo Culture: Harmony.”

The week-long festivities commenced on March 9 with the traditional Kut Tlan ceremony.

Throughout the week, various activities were organized, including exhibitions of handloom, textiles, and handicrafts, a food processing display and court, a flower exhibition, a living museum showcasing traditional Mizo life, as well as photo and painting exhibitions and screenings of Chapchar Kut films.

The main celebration on Friday stood out as the highlight of the week.

A significant number of tourists from across India and overseas, along with Mizo ethnic communities from nearby Northeastern states, participated in the festival.

During his address, Lalduhoma conveyed his greetings to the Zo people worldwide and extended wishes for a joyful Chapchar Kut.

He remarked that the ancestors of the Mizo community celebrated this festival in joy and unity, traditionally steering clear of conflicts during the festivities.

The Chief Minister pointed out that historically, this festival served as a time for reconciliation and unity, stating that this year’s theme encapsulates the essence of Chapchar Kut.

He also underscored the significance of harmony and reconciliation in traditional Mizo society.

According to him, customary justice practices uphold principles such as “Chalrem” and “Saui Tan.”

He emphasized that genuine reconciliation involves the courage to accept responsibility and acknowledge one’s mistakes.

Acknowledging one’s errors without placing blame on others often leads to peace and reconciliation, he noted. Furthermore, Lalduhoma urged individuals to be cautious while expressing opinions on social media, as fostering animosity in politics is contrary to Mizo culture.

“Even during disagreements in discussions or debates, Mizo society typically preserves mutual respect and friendship afterward,” he stated, encouraging everyone to renew their commitment to harmony and unity in the spirit of the festival.

Art and Culture Minister C. Lalsawivunga also expressed his warm wishes for the celebrations and thanked all those involved in making the event a success. Central Young Mizo Association (YMA) President R. Lalngheta expressed gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate this significant festival once again.

He motivated individuals to value this occasion and embody the theme of “Inremna” (Harmony) in their daily lives to fortify unity within the Mizo community.

During the celebrations, Chief Minister Lalduhoma awarded the Chief Minister’s Special Awards to honor distinguished individuals. Historians trace the origins of Chapchar Kut back to between 1450 and 1700 AD in the village of Suaipui, close to the present-day Myanmar border.

After the arrival of Christian missionaries in the late 19th century, the festival saw a decline as it was discouraged on religious grounds. However, it made a significant comeback in 1973, now celebrated without animistic practices or alcohol.
