Aizawl, April 12 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Mizoram, Lalduhoma, stated on Saturday that the diverse ethnic communities within the state have coexisted in harmony and mutual respect for many generations.
Emphasizing the state's rich ethnic diversity, the Chief Minister noted that the various communities have fostered an environment of unity and understanding, which he highlighted as the foundation of Mizoram's identity as one of India's most peaceful and progressive regions.
Lalduhoma made these remarks during the fourth Boisu festival, the traditional New Year celebration of the Reang community, held in Aizawl.
The event was organized by the Bru Student Association (BSA).
The Chief Minister revealed that the Mizoram government is prepared to address the long-standing wishes of Reang students by constructing a Bru House-cum-Hostel at Tanhril in Aizawl, with financial provisions already secured.
The Reang tribals are also referred to as Bru.
Lalduhoma further stated that every citizen of India should have the right to embrace and celebrate their distinct identity, traditions, and lifestyles.
He asserted that enforcing a singular perspective or neglecting the rights to cultural expression is not only unfair but also harmful to societal cohesion.
Regardless of community size, every individual should coexist with dignity and mutual respect, he added.
He noted that arrogance stemming from dominance and resentment from minority groups both obstruct social harmony.
Strongly denouncing all forms of discrimination, religious intolerance, and coercion, Lalduhoma stressed that Mizoram's true strength is built on a foundation of peace and freedom, principles that must be protected at all costs.
Addressing the critical issue of drug abuse, he urged all citizens to unite in striving for a drug-free Mizoram.
He emphasized the importance of enhancing both legal and traditional approaches to combat drug trafficking.
In particular, Lalduhoma pointed out the effectiveness of community-based social sanctions, deeply embedded in Mizo tradition, as powerful tools against drugs, often proving more effective than formal legislation.
He encouraged everyone to continue doing what is right, to recognize the efforts of others, and to commit to preserving the environment.
Lalromawia Apeto, BSA President, along with other leaders from the Reang community, expressed their sincere gratitude to the Chief Minister for approving the construction of the Bru House-cum-Hostel.
The event showcased vibrant cultural performances by the BSA Shillong Cultural Troupe, BSA Aizawl Branch, and the Bodo Students Union from Mizoram University.
The Boisu Kut, celebrated as the New Year festival of the Reang community, represents a significant cultural event.
This year’s festivities embodied the spirit of unity and diversity, with participation from over 1,000 Reang tribal students currently studying and working in Aizawl.
