MLC poll results 2026: Opposition claims BJP losing public trust in UP, Maharashtra
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Opposition leaders on Thursday, 29 October 2026 asserted that the results of Legislative Council (MLC) elections across four states signal deepening public disillusionment with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), citing the Samajwadi Party's gains in Uttar Pradesh and the Congress-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) securing three of five seats in Maharashtra. The elections to 28 Legislative Council seats were held across Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Karnataka on 23 October, with counting beginning on 27 October.
Samajwadi Party Claims Sweeping Margins in UP
Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad said the MLC outcomes carry a clear political message, alleging that the BJP's policies had alienated the youth, farmers and the business community alike. He also alleged that voters perceived the electoral process as having been conducted under pressure.
'The MLC election results send a message that the days of the BJP government are numbered. It will remain in power only until the elections are declared, as every section of society is troubled by its policies, actions and decisions,' Prasad said.
Samajwadi Party spokesperson Ashutosh Verma pointed to the party's performance in Uttar Pradesh — winning five of the 11 seats — and highlighted winning margins of 17,000–18,000 votes in certain constituencies as evidence of strong organisational footing. On future alliances, Verma indicated the party would follow the approach adopted during the 2024 elections, backing candidates on their individual seats. 'This is Akhilesh Yadav's motto too,' he added.
Congress Points to Nagpur Win as Symbolic Blow
Congress MP Mallu Ravi flagged the party's victory in Nagpur — the headquarters of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) — as a particularly significant result, calling it an indicator of broader momentum ahead of the next general elections.
'I want to tell PM (Modi) and HM (Shah) that Congress is getting elected in Nagpur which is the headquarters of the RSS. Similarly, another important constituency is the PM's constituency which the BJP lost,' Ravi said, adding that both seats going to the Congress and its allies pointed to a strong showing in future general elections.
RJD Calls for Opposition Introspection
Not all Opposition voices were celebratory. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLA Bhai Virendra urged the Congress, as the senior partner in the national Opposition, to take greater responsibility for managing inter-party relations. He alleged the Congress had shown a tendency to impose terms rather than consult regional and smaller allies.
'Congress leads the Opposition at the Centre, while we are a major party in Bihar and hold the Leader of Opposition's post. It is Congress' responsibility to coordinate with regional parties and smaller allies across states,' Virendra said — a remark that surfaces ongoing tensions within the broader INDIA bloc.
MVA Wins Three of Five Maharashtra Seats
Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) — NCP(SP) — national spokesperson Clyde Crasto described the Maharashtra outcome as encouraging, noting that the NCP(SP) had won two seats and the Congress one, giving the MVA a 3-2 edge over the ruling alliance despite the latter controlling both the state and central governments.
The results across all four states will feed into the ongoing jockeying for alliance positions ahead of upcoming state-level contests, even as internal Opposition debates over coordination and leadership continue to simmer.
