Imphal, Nov 6 (NationPress) In a significant move towards enhancing security measures, the annual mock bomb threat drill was successfully carried out at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in the capital of Manipur, Imphal, on Thursday. This exercise involved collaboration among personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and all relevant stakeholders, as confirmed by officials.
An official from the Airport Authority of India (AAI) stated that this high-intensity drill assessed real-time emergency response abilities and showcased the impressive coordination among the CISF, Dog Squad, Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), Bureau of Immigration (BOI), Manipur Police, airlines, AAI staff, AAI Fire Services, and other airport stakeholders.
According to a source from CISF, “This exercise not only confirmed the effectiveness of rapid response protocols but also strengthened inter-agency collaboration, ensuring that Imphal Airport is thoroughly prepared to handle high-risk bomb threat situations with accuracy and coordinated action.”
Located just 6 km from the city center of Imphal, the Bir Tikendrajit International Airport facilitates flights to cities such as Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Agartala, and various others across the nation.
A senior official from AAI mentioned that similar mock security preparedness exercises will be conducted across the 17 operational airports in the eight Northeastern states, where CISF personnel are stationed in most airports.
Earlier last month, flight operations at the Imphal International Airport faced temporary suspension due to the sighting of a drone, raising considerable security alarms.
An AAI official reported that an IndiGo flight from Agartala to Imphal noted a drone on its final approach path, at an altitude between 3,600 and 4,000 feet.
Normal operations were restored only after the incident was promptly reported to Manipur Police, and the necessary security clearance was obtained.
The AAI official advised the public against operating drones in the airport vicinity, particularly within Imphal City (East and West), Nambol, and Bishnupur areas, stating that unauthorized drone operations pose a serious threat to aircraft safety and could lead to the temporary closure of the airport, causing considerable inconvenience to passengers. Violating drone operation regulations can result in stringent legal repercussions. Ensuring the safety and security of passengers and aircraft operations is our utmost priority.
Imphal West's Superintendent of Police Shivakanta Singh also urged the public to refrain from flying drones in areas close to the airport, stating, “If anyone is found operating a drone between Sanjenthong and Kwakeithel, please inform the police immediately so that it can be brought down. It is disrupting flight operations.” He warned that violations of drone regulations may lead to strict legal action.
Last year, the Assam Rifles deployed anti-drone systems in the peripheral areas of Imphal Valley in Manipur to counter any potential threats posed by “rogue drones.”
