Posters Mocking CEC Gyanesh Kumar Emerge Near CM Mamata's Home
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 7 (NationPress) Just a day prior to the arrival of the full bench from the Election Commission of India (ECI) in Kolkata on Sunday night, posters ridiculing Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar appeared in abundance in the ward of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), which is home to West Bengal's Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee.
This full bench, headed by Kumar, is set to engage in a busy agenda over the next two days, focusing on the ongoing judicial review of voters' documents flagged under the "logical discrepancy" classification, along with assessing readiness for the significant Assembly elections scheduled later this year.
The Trinamool Congress, which acknowledged responsibility for these posters, depicts Kumar lying on the ground in a state of distress, pleading, "I made a mistake. Please forgive me, Madam".
Illustrated in the cartoon, a woman's fist is shown striking Kumar's jaw, while her identity remains obscured. The word "tigress" is emblazoned on her fist. There’s also a subtle hint of a saree, characterized by a white base and light-blue trim—an outfit commonly associated with the Chief Minister.
The poster, crafted in a cartoonish style, prominently features a judge at his bench.
The West Bengal chapter of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) condemned this cartoon as indicative of "low standards and a highly offensive depiction".
BJP councilor in KMC, Sajal Ghosh, expressed that such disrespect towards the head of a crucial democratic institution like the ECI is unacceptable. He remarked, "This also highlights the Trinamool Congress' concern regarding the Special Intensive Revision process, which has already led to the removal of the names of numerous fraudulent voters."
Political analysts suggest that the Trinamool Congress strategically placed these posters just ahead of the ECI's visit, ensuring they were displayed in locations with heavy foot traffic.
