Modi, Tusk agree to double India-Poland trade by 2030, deepen AI and defence ties
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk held wide-ranging talks at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on 22 October 2026, exploring new avenues of cooperation in Artificial Intelligence (AI), critical minerals, defence, and green technologies. The two leaders also committed to doubling bilateral trade by 2030, building on the India-Poland Strategic Partnership established in 2024.
Key Outcomes of the Summit
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the discussions spanned trade, investment, education, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. Both leaders underscored the importance of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA), describing it as a mechanism set to 'unlock new opportunities for businesses and industries' and give 'fresh impetus to economic engagement.'
The two PMs also 'exchanged views on regional and global developments, reaffirming their commitment to a rules-based international order and reform of global institutions, including the UN Security Council,' according to the MEA's statement.
Jaishankar's Role in the Bilateral Talks
Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called on PM Tusk separately, discussing cooperation across various sectors. 'Pleased to call on Prime Minister Donald Tusk of Poland. Appreciated his sharing thoughts on deepening India-Poland cooperation across a wide range of domains,' Jaishankar said in a post on X.
About Tusk's Visit to India
PM Tusk arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday evening for a three-day official visit aimed at bolstering bilateral cooperation in defence, trade, and strategic sectors. He was received at the airport by Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries and Jal Shakti, Raj Bhushan Choudhary. Tusk is accompanied by Poland's Minister of Finance and Economy, Andrzej Domanski, along with a high-level business delegation. According to the MEA, this is Tusk's second visit to India as Polish PM — his first was in 2010 during his earlier tenure.
Business Forum and Bengaluru Engagements
An India-Poland Business Forum is being held in New Delhi on 22 October and in Bengaluru on 23 October. After his Delhi engagements, PM Tusk is scheduled to travel to Bengaluru, where he will meet stakeholders from the Information Technology (IT) and space sectors — two industries where both nations see complementary strengths.
Why This Partnership Matters
The visit signals a sharpening of India's strategic ties with Central Europe at a time when New Delhi is diversifying supply chains for critical minerals and defence procurement away from traditional partners. Poland, as one of the European Union's largest economies and a key NATO member with a rapidly expanding defence budget, represents a meaningful partner for India's evolving security and industrial needs. Notably, the emphasis on AI and green technologies also mirrors India's domestic push under its national missions in both sectors.
