Guwahati, Feb 24 (NationPress) On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed the architectural design of the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport during the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit, according to officials.
A representative of the LGBI airport indicated that this achievement represents a crucial advancement in transforming the airport into a premier aviation hub and a vital entry point to northeast India.
“Drawing inspiration from the natural allure of Assam, the terminal incorporates a distinctive Bamboo Orchids theme, signifying biodiversity, strength, and sustainability. The design harmoniously integrates with the surroundings, honoring the region’s cultural and natural legacy,” she stated.
The spokesperson added that incorporating bamboo and orchids in the design underscores the airport's dedication to eco-friendliness and sustainability.
Currently, the NITB is under construction and is projected to accommodate 13.1 million passengers per annum (MPPA), establishing it as the first terminal of its kind in the northeastern region of India.
According to the spokesperson, the terminal is anticipated to commence operations in the final quarter of 2025.
The NITB at LGBI airport will feature a remarkable range of facilities and amenities, many of which will be introduced for the first time in the region.
The expansive 140,000 sqm terminal building, capable of handling 13.1 MPPA, marks a sixfold increase from the capacity of the current terminal.
During the unveiling event, Prime Minister Modi was joined by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Managed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) and named after Gopinath Bordoloi, the first Chief Minister of Assam, the LGBI airport serves as a significant gateway to the northeastern states, linking the region with major domestic and international destinations.
