Guwahati, March 2 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday that the new terminal of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati will be available for public use this year.

He highlighted that the new terminal, once operational, will address the rising demand from passengers in the state.

In a post on X, CM Sarma stated, “The Integrated Terminal of the LGBI Airport will be ready this year to accommodate the ever-increasing needs of Assam's travelers. During the #AdvantageAssam2 exhibition, I reviewed the scaled model along with the facilities planned for the new airport.”

It is important to note that Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the design of the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport during the 'Advantage Assam 2.0' investment summit.

A representative of the LGBI airport remarked that this achievement represents a crucial step towards evolving the airport into a premier aviation hub and a key access point to northeast India. “Inspired by the natural elegance of Assam, the new terminal incorporates a unique Bamboo Orchids theme, symbolizing biodiversity, resilience, and sustainability. Its design harmonizes with the landscape, paying tribute to the region's cultural and natural heritage,” she explained.

The official added that the incorporation of bamboo and orchids in the design underscores the airport's dedication to sustainability and eco-consciousness. Presently under construction, the NITB is projected to accommodate 13.1 million passengers per annum (MPPA), marking it as the first of its kind in the northeast.

The terminal is anticipated to commence operations in the final quarter of 2025, according to the spokesperson.

The NITB at LGBI airport is equipped with an impressive range of facilities and amenities, many of which will be introduced for the first time in the region.

The LGBI airport spokesperson noted that the expansive 140,000 sqm terminal building, capable of handling 13.1 MPPA, represents a six-fold increase over the current operational terminal's design capacity.

During the design unveiling of the NITB, Prime Minister Modi was joined by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) and named after the first Chief Minister of Assam, Gopinath Bordoloi, the LGBI airport is a vital entry point for the northeastern states, linking the region to major domestic and international destinations.
