Addressing the media following the facility's inauguration, the Chief Minister noted that the new terminal is designed to greatly increase passenger handling capacity and enhance the overall travel experience, establishing Guwahati as a vital aviation gateway to both the Northeast and nearby Southeast Asian regions.
Sarma also revealed plans for the construction of two five-star hotels in close proximity to the airport terminal to cater to the rising influx of domestic and international travelers. He mentioned that these proposed hospitality developments are expected to bolster tourism infrastructure and create job opportunities for local residents.
Discussing future expansion plans, the Chief Minister indicated that the state government is considering building an additional terminal at LGBI Airport within the next two years, given the rapid increase in air traffic in the area.
Furthermore, he mentioned plans to establish an “aero hub” in Borjhar similar to major aviation hubs like Delhi.
“Our vision is to convert Guwahati into a significant aviation and logistics hub for the entire Northeast. The intended aero hub will enhance connectivity, promote trade, tourism, and investment, while reducing reliance on metropolitan areas outside the region,” Sarma stated.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the new integrated terminal is a reflection of Assam's economic development and its aspirations to become a significant connectivity and commercial center in eastern India.
He added that the project has been developed with a focus on modern architecture, sustainability, and user-friendly facilities.
According to airport officials, the integrated terminal boasts modern amenities, advanced security systems, expanded check-in counters, improved baggage handling processes, and enhanced parking and surface transport connectivity.
Sarma affirmed that the expansion of LGBI Airport will be crucial in supporting Assam’s development objectives by improving connectivity, attracting investments, and boosting tourism.
He reiterated the state government’s commitment to collaborating with the Airports Authority of India and the Central government to further bolster aviation infrastructure in Assam.
Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is recognized as the busiest airport in the Northeast, serving as a critical transport hub connecting the region with major cities throughout India.
