Profile: Who Is Dr. Pramod Sawant?

Dr. Pramod Sawant was born on April 24, 1973, to Pandurang and Padmini Sawant in Goa. He completed his Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine, and Surgery (BAMS) from Ganga Education Society's Ayurvedic Medical College in Kolhapur, followed by a Master of Social Work (MSW) from Tilak Maharashtra University, Pune. He belongs to the Maratha community.

He is married to Sulakshana Sawant, a chemistry teacher at Shri Shantadurga Higher Secondary School in Bicholim. She is an active BJP member and currently serves as President of the Goa BJP Mahila Morcha.

Political Journey: From Defeat to Chief Minister

Sawant's political entry came in 2008 when he contested the Pale constituency by-election as a BJP candidate but lost to Pratab Prabhakar Gauns of the Indian National Congress. He bounced back in the 2012 Assembly elections, winning the Sanquelim constituency by a commanding margin of approximately 14,255 votes against the same opponent.

In 2017, he was re-elected from Sanquelim, defeating Dharmesh Saglani of the INC by around 10,058 votes. On March 22, 2017, he was elected as the Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly.

Following the untimely passing of legendary leader Manohar Parrikar, Sawant was chosen by the Goa Legislative Assembly to succeed him. He was sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister of Goa on March 19, 2019, and secured a second consecutive term in the 2022 state elections.
