Bhopal, Feb 17 (NationPress) Chief Minister Mohan Yadav is set to unveil a life-size statue of the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee during his visit to the Morena district on Monday.
This statue serves as a tribute to Vajpayee for initiating the river-interlinking project. Prime Minister Narendra Modi advanced this initiative and on December 25, 2024, he laid the foundation for the Ken-Betwa river-linking project in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh. This project aims to address the water scarcity issues in the Bundelkhand region, which spans parts of both Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 45,000 crore.
During his visit, CM Yadav will assess the arrangements at the Chambal River Gharial Sanctuary and review the existing tourism facilities. He will also release gharials into the Chambal River and visit the Karah Dham Ashram to evaluate ongoing activities.
The Chambal River boasts the largest population of gharials, not just in India, but globally. Of the approximately 3,000 gharials worldwide, nearly 85 percent inhabit the Chambal River. The first gharial census initiated four decades ago highlighted the significant presence of this species in the river. Gharials emerge from the water in January and February due to favorable temperatures, facilitating easier counting alongside crocodiles.
This sanctuary is a joint conservation effort involving three states: Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. It was officially designated as a wildlife sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh in 1978. The main aim of the Chambal Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary is to protect the critically endangered gharial, the red-crowned roofed turtle, and the endangered Gangetic dolphin.
CM Yadav remarked that nature has endowed Madhya Pradesh with numerous blessings, including dense forests, a variety of tree species, and a rich diversity of wildlife, contributing to the state's unique identity. He stated, 'Madhya Pradesh has the highest population of tigers, leopards, and gharials in India. Furthermore, it is the only state in the country to have undertaken the reintroduction of cheetahs.'
