Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha member Mahua Moitra, representing the Krishnanagar constituency in Nadia district, West Bengal, on Friday, 18 September 2026, filed a formal complaint at Tehatta Police Station against eight Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists over an alleged egg attack on her convoy during a party meeting visit on 16 September. Among the eight BJP activists named in the complaint are the panchayat samiti chief and deputy chief of Tehatta-I block — both locally influential figures within the BJP's organisational structure in Nadia. BJP Denies Involvement

The BJP's Nadia district leadership has flatly rejected the allegations. Subrata Kobiraj, BJP legislator from Tehatta Assembly Constituency, told reporters that no BJP worker or supporter was involved in the incident. He argued that Moitra's reportedly controversial remarks about Hindu deities had generated strong public anger, and that what occurred on 16 September was a spontaneous expression of that sentiment — not an organised attack by party functionaries.

What Moitra Said

Moitra shared videos of the incident on social media, alleging that BJP office-bearers had encircled the venue of her party meeting and pelted eggs at her convoy as she left. Drawing on a recent observation by Supreme Court judge Justice Dipankar Datta — who reportedly remarked that politicians should not be overly troubled by egg attacks when freedom fighters once faced bullets — Moitra said she had confronted the situation in the same spirit.

'BJP office-bearers, not the public, surrounded my meeting and pelted eggs as I left. Thank you, MiLord, for upholding our Constitutional protections,' she said. She also described herself, in that moment, as both a sitting Member of Parliament and a freedom fighter in the spirit of India's democratic tradition.

Row Over Police Communication

Moitra also levelled a separate allegation against the officer-in-charge of Tehatta Police Station, Supriya Ranjan Maji, who reportedly claimed on camera that no one had informed him of her visit. Moitra countered that the Nadia district superintendent of police had issued a formal letter — with a copy marked to Maji — about her Tehatta schedule. 'Does Mr Maji also have the BJP disease of short-term memory loss? Disgraceful,' she said, sharpening the political charge around the episode.

This incident is the latest in a series of confrontations between TMC and BJP in West Bengal ahead of electoral cycles in the state. Nadia district, which has seen competitive electoral battles between the two parties, has become a flashpoint for ground-level political tensions.
