MNS-BJP clash over BMC corruption and Mumbai infra failures
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) traded sharp accusations on Monday, 6 July over alleged corruption in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and a string of infrastructure failures across Mumbai and Maharashtra. The confrontation escalated after Mumbai BJP chief Amit Satam alleged that MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT) had 'milked' the BMC for 25 years, drawing furious pushback from MNS workers statewide.
Protests and Effigy Burning
MNS workers launched demonstrations across the state in response to Satam's remarks. The most visible protest unfolded near Chembur Station, where party workers struck an effigy of Amit Satam with footwear. The scenes underscored the depth of resentment within MNS ranks over what the party characterised as an unprovoked attack on MNS chief Raj Thackeray.
Missing Link Expressway Under Fire
Senior MNS leader and former MLA Bala Nandgaonkar trained his fire on both Satam and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis over the condition of the recently inaugurated Mumbai-Pune Missing Link Expressway, which was hit by a landslide shortly after opening. 'When a hunter aims precisely at his prey, he is called a hunter. But those who act in a hasty, reckless manner end up becoming the prey themselves. The Missing Link project was rushed through to inauguration just ahead of the elections to gather election funding. Take credit for good work, but take responsibility for its failures as well,' Nandgaonkar said.
MNS's official handle on X amplified the charge, stating: 'Just two months ago, the Mumbai-Pune Missing Link, which was inaugurated with much fanfare, has come to a standstill due to a landslide. Considering that this is a landslide-prone area, weren't any precautionary measures provided?' The party also questioned Fadnavis directly: 'Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is saying that the testing of this bridge is still ongoing. If the Chief Minister's stance is that testing is still underway, then why didn't he ever mention that at the time of inauguration? What's the purpose behind starting public travel and then conducting testing? You took the credit, but will you now take responsibility for this negligence?'
Demand for Satam's Removal
Nandgaonkar escalated his attack by formally demanding that Chief Minister Fadnavis and state BJP President Ravindra Chavan remove Satam from his post immediately. He also called for an urgent audit of trees across Mumbai following a series of tree-falling incidents during the current monsoon season, citing inadequate pre-monsoon preparations. 'We have seen past Mumbai BJP presidents and their work. The current leaders have achieved status overnight with shallow knowledge. When people in responsible positions lack basic decorum, such incidents happen,' he said.
Political Context
The spat comes amid Maharashtra's monsoon season, which has already exposed infrastructure vulnerabilities across the state. This is not the first time the BMC's upkeep and Mumbai's flood-prone roads have become political flashpoints — similar exchanges erupted during the 2022 and 2023 monsoons. Notably, the Mahayuti alliance, which includes the BJP, holds power at both the state and municipal levels, making accountability lines sharper than in previous cycles. How the ruling coalition responds to the Missing Link controversy and the tree-audit demand will be closely watched as the monsoon intensifies.
