New Delhi, July 21 (NationPress) The Monsoon Session of Parliament officially kicks off today, marking the first gathering since Operation Sindoor, India’s precise airstrikes targeting terror camps in Pakistan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to deliver an address to inaugurate the session.
This session, the first since the significant Operation Sindoor, follows the tragic Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in 26 fatalities, primarily among tourists. It will run from July 21 to August 21, featuring 21 sittings over 32 days.
Both Houses of Parliament will recess from August 12 to August 17 to accommodate Independence Day celebrations, with a reconvening on August 18.
The Opposition is seeking explanations and accountability on multiple issues. Foremost among the topics for discussion is Operation Sindoor, prompted by the deadly attack on April 22.
The Opposition is calling for a statement from Prime Minister Modi regarding US President Donald Trump's claims about mediating peace between India and Pakistan.
Another pressing issue expected to dominate discussions is the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.
Opposition factions have voiced concerns over the transparency and timing of this process, alleging that the government is attempting to sway the forthcoming state elections.
In contrast, the government plans to propose several critical bills during the session, including legislation on GST reforms, taxation laws, public trust regulation, sports governance, ports and minerals, and the conservation of geo-heritage sites.
A report from a parliamentary panel regarding the new Income Tax Bill, 2025, is also scheduled for presentation in the Lok Sabha.
Moreover, Parliament is anticipated to deliberate on a proposal for the removal of a judge, further amplifying the session's agenda.
“We are extremely open to dialogue on significant matters such as Operation Sindoor. These issues are of utmost national importance. The government is not retreating and will never retreat but is open to discussions within established rules and conventions,” stated Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju following an all-party meeting on Sunday.
He underscored that rules and conventions are critical for the government.
