Amaravati, Oct 29 (NationPress) The severe cyclonic storm ‘Montha’ has made landfall along the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts, specifically between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Narsapur, during the midnight hours. This has resulted in torrential rains accompanied by fierce winds, leading to fallen trees and power outages.
The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) reported that the cyclone crossed the coastline between 11:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. The rear section of the cyclone began its landward journey early Wednesday morning.
As per the weather update released at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, ‘Montha’ has progressed northwest at a speed of 10 km/h over the past six hours and has lessened in intensity to a cyclonic storm.
It is anticipated that the cyclone will continue to move nearly northwest across coastal Andhra Pradesh while maintaining its cyclonic intensity for the next six hours, after which it is expected to weaken further into a deep depression.
The cyclone has unleashed heavy rainfall combined with winds reaching speeds of approximately 105 km/h. Even after landfall, strong winds continued at speeds between 85-95 km/h.
APSDMA has urged residents in coastal Andhra to stay alert due to the potent winds affecting the area.
The cyclone has caused storm surges along the coastline, with high tidal waves flooding roads in the Konaseema district. The Uppada coast in Kakinada district also experienced significant wave activity. Rajahmundry faced power disruptions due to the intense winds.
Coastal districts of Andhra have been receiving substantial rainfall since Tuesday, leading to the inundation of low-lying regions. Major thoroughfares in Ongole town are currently underwater.
Among the hardest hit by the cyclone, Kavali recorded the highest rainfall of 23 cm, followed by Ulavapadu with 17 cm and Chirala with 15 cm.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for all districts in coastal Andhra and Telangana for Wednesday.
Forecasts from the IMD indicate rain across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka due to the cyclone’s influence.
Heavy rainfall is likely in several districts of Andhra Pradesh, including Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Guntur, among others.
Moderate to heavy rainfall is also expected in Kakinada, Konaseema, and several other districts.
