Lakshadweep, June 11 (NationPress) Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, George Kurian, has emphasized that seaweed farming represents a promising opportunity within the fisheries sector, offering a substantial livelihood prospect for coastal communities, particularly for women.
During his address to farmers, fishermen, and beneficiaries of various central schemes at the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan (VKSA) campaign held at Kavaratti Island by Krishi Vigyan Kendra -Lakshadweep, Kurian highlighted the remarkable rise in income for women engaged in seaweed cultivation in Tamil Nadu, showcasing its potential.
"The Lakshadweep Islands are ideally suited for seaweed cultivation. The Union government has officially recognized the archipelago as a 'Seaweed Cluster.' This initiative will significantly advance the development of seaweed farming and its applications throughout the region," he stated.
Kurian commended the contributions of the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) for its technical support in promoting seaweed farming in Lakshadweep.
Recently, the KVK-Lakshadweep of the CMFRI was honored as the national best for facilitating the widespread adoption of seaweed farming technology among various other initiatives.
Highlighting the islands' vast economic potential, Kurian pointed to seaweed farming, fisheries, coconut cultivation, and tourism as essential drivers for regional development.
"Enhancing tuna fisheries in the area will significantly bolster the blue economy and local livelihoods. The government plans to introduce innovative vessels equipped for real-time processing alongside fishing activities, ultimately increasing the market value of Lakshadweep tuna," he added.
Kurian explained that the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan campaign aims to empower farmers with knowledge of the latest agricultural technologies and allied sectors. This initiative is part of a larger vision to foster overall growth in the agricultural sector, contributing to India's aspiration of becoming a developed nation by 2047, he noted.
Additionally, the Union Minister distributed small machines and equipment to farmers and farmer groups supported by the KVK, the Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) of ICAR-CMFRI, and the PMMSY. He later visited the ornamental fish hatchery established by the CMFRI in Kavaratti with assistance from the NCDC, New Delhi.
