MP cabinet clears ₹1.46 lakh crore development package, Narmada Mission launched
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Madhya Pradesh state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, on Tuesday, 18 August approved a sweeping ₹1.46 lakh crore outlay for the state's all-round development, encompassing water conservation, women's empowerment, health, infrastructure, and scientific advancement. The decisions mark one of the largest single-sitting approval packages in recent Madhya Pradesh cabinet history.
Narmada Mission and Water Conservation
In a significant step for the state's most revered river, the cabinet greenlit the formation of the Aviral Maa Narmada Mission, aimed at ensuring the uninterrupted flow of the Narmada. More than 35 per cent of Madhya Pradesh's population is directly or indirectly dependent on the river, which is widely regarded as the state's lifeline. The mission signals a long-term commitment to ecological and hydrological sustainability along the river's course.
Industrial Corridors and Infrastructure Push
Madhya Pradesh has identified and proposed 11 locations for new industrial development, with proposals totalling over ₹9,000 crore — approximately ₹8,000 crore in direct project costs — spanning 9,000 acres. The focus is on expressway-based industrial corridors, a model that integrates logistics and manufacturing along high-speed road networks.
To strengthen road infrastructure management, the cabinet approved 35 new posts in the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation and decided to continue seven existing positions, equipping the body to oversee the large pipeline of expressways and new roads planned for the coming year.
Women's Empowerment Schemes
The cabinet allocated ₹14,365 crore for the operation of the Ladli Behna Yojana and ₹16,326 crore for the Madhya Pradesh Ladli Laxmi Yojana, two flagship schemes targeting women's financial security and welfare. A further ₹2,137 crore has been earmarked for the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana. Additionally, four working women's hostels will be constructed under the Government of India's Special Assistance Scheme, aimed at boosting women's participation in the formal workforce.
Health and Scientific Research Allocations
Health schemes received an outlay of ₹11,835 crore, while agricultural education, research, and extension were allocated ₹870 crore. The Science and Technology department has been earmarked ₹492 crore for innovation and capacity-building initiatives over the next five years. The department's current budget stands at ₹734 crore — a sharp rise from the ₹10 crore allocated during the previous Congress government, according to the state administration.
What Comes Next
With approvals now in place, implementation timelines for the industrial corridor proposals and the Narmada Mission are expected to be detailed by respective departments. The scale of the outlay, cutting across sectors from ecology to employment, will be closely watched for on-ground execution, particularly given Madhya Pradesh's mixed track record on converting large cabinet approvals into measurable outcomes.
