Four new air routes took off from Raja Bhoj Airport, Bhopal on Sunday, 9 August 2026 — connecting Madhya Pradesh's cities directly to Patna, Kolkata, and each other for the first time, and marking a concrete leap in the state's aviation footprint. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav and Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu jointly flagged off the services at a launch event at the airport.

The four routes inaugurated are Bhopal–Rewa, Bhopal–Patna, Rewa–Kolkata, and Jabalpur–Kolkata. The launches were announced by the Chief Minister's Office of Madhya Pradesh, which described the development as 'प्रगति की नई पहचान' — a new identity of progress for the state.

What these four routes actually change

Until now, residents of Rewa — a city in eastern Madhya Pradesh — had no direct air link to the state capital or to Kolkata. The new Bhopal–Rewa route collapses a road journey of several hours into a short hop, while Rewa–Kolkata opens a direct eastern corridor for business and migrant travellers who previously had to transit through larger hubs. Jabalpur, a major industrial and educational centre in central MP, gains its own direct Kolkata connection. The Bhopal–Patna route stitches together two state capitals in the Hindi heartland, easing movement for government, commerce, and pilgrimage traffic.

UDAN's regional push behind the expansion

These routes sit squarely within the framework of the Government of India's UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) regional connectivity scheme, launched in 2016 to subsidise flights to underserved tier-2 and tier-3 airports through viability gap funding. Madhya Pradesh has been a consistent beneficiary of UDAN rounds, with airports at Rewa and Jabalpur among those earmarked for incremental route additions. The presence of Union Minister Ram Mohan Naidu at the Bhopal launch signals the Centre's active co-ownership of the expansion — aviation connectivity being a shared federal priority rather than a purely state-driven push.

MP's growing place on India's aviation map

Successive route additions have been gradually repositioning Madhya Pradesh from a transit state to a destination and origin point in its own right. The addition of Kolkata connections from both Rewa and Jabalpur is particularly notable: it links central India's interior directly to the eastern metro, a corridor that had been almost entirely dependent on rail. Load factors on these new routes over the coming months will be the real test — whether demand matches political ambition is the question the aviation industry will be watching closely.
