Bhopal/Chhindwara, Oct 10 (NationPress) The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Madhya Pradesh Police has brought Ranganathan Govindhan, the owner of Tamil Nadu-based Sresan Pharmaceuticals, before the Parasia (Chhindwara) court on Friday, related to the tragic deaths of 25 children because of a toxic cough syrup.
Govindhan, who had a ₹20,000 bounty on his head, was captured in Chennai after he and his wife fled following the incident.
As reported by police sources, he is set to be presented in the Parasia court at 2 p.m., where the SIT will request his remand.
The investigative team, consisting of 12 members, including six officers, was sent to Tamil Nadu earlier this week to track Govindhan's movements, culminating in his arrest on Wednesday.
Authorities were concerned he might attempt to flee overseas, as his children live abroad. He has now been transported to Parasia in Chhindwara for further questioning.
The cough syrup in question, named 'Coldrif', was discovered to contain dangerously elevated levels of diethylene glycol, a toxic substance.
In parallel, the state government has ordered post-mortem examinations for three of the deceased children, while forensic teams are diligently working to collect technical evidence to bolster the case.
Additionally, the state government has suspended certain officials and arrested Praveen Soni in Parasia for prescribing the hazardous cough syrup 'Coldrif'.
However, the Indian Medical Association has protested Soni's arrest, asserting that doctors bear no responsibility for the manufacturing of medicines.
According to its representatives, the Association is exploring options to challenge Dr. Soni's arrest in the High Court. Public outrage over the incident has surged.
Workers from the Samajwadi Party demonstrated at Malviya Chowk, calling for the resignation of state Health Minister Rajendra Shukla.
Protesters have accused the government of negligence, blaming it for the loss of innocent lives.
Posters of the minister were displayed on the road as demonstrators demanded accountability. This tragic event has ignited widespread concern and calls for enhanced pharmaceutical regulation, as investigations continue into this grievous failure in drug safety.
