Bhopal, June 14 (NationPress) A severe thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall turned into a disaster in Gwalior on Friday night when a two-storey house's wall fell onto a nearby tin shed, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuring three others.
The event transpired around 4:30 PM in the Shankarpur area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Bahodapur police station.
The collapse occurred near New Loha Mandi as a sudden storm swept through the city, leading to the wall's failure.
Eight individuals were trapped beneath the rubble. Local residents quickly alerted the authorities and the administration.
Personnel from the administration, Municipal Corporation, and Fire Brigade arrived at the scene to recover the deceased and assist the injured, who were subsequently transported to Jaya Arogya Hospital.
As per police reports, several individuals sought refuge under the tin shed adjacent to a milk dairy to escape the torrential rain. This shed was positioned next to the home of Mahendra Singh Ingle, whose wall collapsed due to the storm's intensity.
“The victims were trapped under the debris before rescue teams could reach them,” stated police officials.
Three men — Javed Khan (32), son of Rehman; Israyal Ahmed (40), son of Salim Pehlwan; and Mafrat Khan (35), son of Mohsin Khan Ahmed — tragically lost their lives in this incident.
One victim died on-site, while the other two succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.
The injured include Mahendra Singh Ingle and Mahir Khan (20), son of Salim Khan, both reported to be in critical condition and receiving care at a local hospital.
The storm was sudden and severe, with intense winds and heavy rain battering the area for almost an hour. Locals rushed to help before the emergency services arrived.
“An investigation is currently ongoing to assess the structural integrity of the collapsed wall and whether negligence was a factor,” a police official indicated.
Authorities are looking into whether the wall on the second floor was constructed with inadequate materials, potentially unable to withstand the storm's force.
As the monsoon season approaches in India, the Gwalior-Chambal region has been experiencing intense storms over the past 24 hours, with rainfall reported in several locations.
