Madhya Pradesh has procured nearly 100 lakh metric tonnes of wheat this season, cementing its position as the second-highest procuring state in the country after Punjab. The state has also set a record by purchasing wheat from 13.1 lakh farmers at the Minimum Support Price (MSP), according to a state government statement issued on Saturday, 23 May.

Key Procurement Figures

The state government has directly transferred more than ₹20,680 crore into farmers' bank accounts so far this season. Farmers are receiving ₹2,625 per quintal — comprising the Centre's MSP of ₹2,585 and an additional bonus of ₹40 per quintal provided by the Madhya Pradesh government. Adequate storage arrangements have been made for the procured grain.

What the Government Said

Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Minister Govind Singh Rajput credited the achievement to the proactive initiatives of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, describing it as the highest wheat procurement at support price in the last 10 years, excluding the Covid-19 period. The minister also noted that the original procurement target of 7.8 million metric tonnes was revised upward to 10 million metric tonnes by the Central government, reflecting the state's sustained performance and effective monitoring.

Chief Minister's Direct Oversight

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has personally monitored procurement operations, conducting surprise inspections at several procurement centres to verify proper weighing arrangements, availability of gunny bags, and adequate farmer facilities. During these visits, he interacted directly with farmers to gather feedback on the payment process. In a notable relief measure, he extended the procurement window till 28 May for farmers who had already booked slots.

Operational Improvements at Procurement Centres

To ease the procurement load, the number of weighing scales at each centre has been increased from four to six, with district administrations authorised to add more if needed. The deadline for issuing weighing slips has been extended to 10 pm, while payment vouchers can now be processed till midnight. Procurement activities run six days a week, and centres are equipped with gunny bags, quality-testing equipment, computers, porters, and cleaning tools.
