Mumbai, May 21 (NationPress) The Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde, announced on Wednesday that Maharashtra has pioneered a fintech policy aimed at providing financial support to startups and various industries. He emphasized that Mumbai has emerged as the leading hub for startups that attract the highest funding in the nation.
Shinde highlighted that Maharashtra is home to 24 percent of all startups in India.
“Maharashtra ranks first in the country regarding startups, and as per the Economic Survey 2025, there are 26,686 startups in the state, representing 24 percent of the total startups nationwide,” the Deputy Chief Minister stated during the Startup Conclave 2025, co-hosted by CSIR and three leading scientific institutions.
He pointed out that Mumbai is becoming increasingly attractive for startups due to the presence of investors and venture capital.
The state has initiated programs like 'Maharashtra Startup Week', 'Mumbai Fintech Hub', and the 'Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Women Startup Scheme'. These initiatives have transformed Mumbai into a center for financial and technological innovation, he claimed.
The Deputy Chief Minister also noted that sectors such as fintech, e-commerce, healthtech, edtech, and deep tech startups are thriving, with Maharashtra boasting the highest number of unicorn companies in India, totaling approximately 27.
Shinde further asserted that Mumbai is the most funded startup hub in the country, with startups securing $3.7 billion in funding this year alone, marking a remarkable 154 percent increase from the previous year.
Pune is leading in information technology, the automotive sector, and biotechnology. Furthermore, the construction of the country’s most advanced 'Innovation City' is currently underway over 300 acres in Navi Mumbai, aimed at fostering startups in science, technology, biotechnology, data science, and advanced manufacturing.
Shinde concluded by stating that there are more than 1.5 lakh startups operating across India, and the nation is on track to become the premier startup hub globally.
