Mumbai, July 14 (NationPress) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Monday that the government will soon make a decision regarding the report presented by BJP legislator Pravin Darekar concerning self-redevelopment and group self-redevelopment of housing societies. This initiative aims to assist Mumbaikars in achieving their aspirations for beautiful and spacious homes.
During a ceremony where Darekar delivered the committee's findings, Fadnavis noted that the committee had submitted its report ahead of schedule. The recommendations from the study group will be forwarded to the Housing, Cooperatives and Urban Development Departments, with a proposal based on these suggestions to be approved by the cabinet.
The Chief Minister stated that a decision regarding the study group's recommendations will be communicated soon, and a report on progress will be presented in the upcoming legislative session.
Fadnavis emphasized that this decision is crucial for preventing fraud in the redevelopment of housing societies.
“The self-redevelopment concept was initiated in 2019. I participated in a meeting of cooperative housing societies, where 19 demands were made; 18 were addressed, leading to a government decision on housing society redevelopment. It became evident that more actions were necessary. Consequently, a study group was formed on April 24, 2025, under Pravin Darekar's leadership. This group has provided insightful and informative recommendations for cooperative housing societies' self-redevelopment and group self-redevelopment,” he elaborated.
Fadnavis further mentioned that the Mumbai District Bank has effectively developed cooperative housing societies. However, 1,600 societies have submitted redevelopment proposals. Recognizing the need for funding for their development, the study group has also suggested measures for credit provision, including guidelines for cooperative housing society members.
“The study group has recommended including slum redevelopment projects and the development of cess and non-cess buildings. Amendments to airport rules and deemed conveyance are also suggested. To facilitate credit for group self-redevelopment, the Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah has been advised to secure funds from the National Cooperative Development Corporation,” said the Chief Minister.
He added that assistance will be available from the Union government.
Deputy Chief Minister and Housing Minister Eknath Shinde stated that the Mumbai Bank is providing share capital for self-redevelopment. If smaller housing projects are self-developed, local residents will primarily benefit, making the dream of living in spacious homes a reality for many. This initiative will play a significant role in attracting residents who have moved away from Mumbai back to the city.
“The Mumbai District Bank has created a successful model for self-redevelopment and group self-redevelopment. The report from the Darekar-led committee will be positively considered,” he concluded.
