New Delhi, April 8 (NationPress) President Droupadi Murmu was awarded the ‘City Key of Honour’ by the Mayor of Lisbon during a ceremony held at the City Hall of Lisbon, Portugal, yesterday evening.

During her address, President Murmu expressed gratitude to the Mayor and the citizens of Lisbon for their warm gesture. She highlighted that Lisbon is celebrated for its open-mindedness, the warmth of its inhabitants, and its rich culture, along with a strong sense of tolerance and respect for diversity.

Following the ceremony, she attended a banquet hosted in her honor by the President of Portugal, H.E. Mr. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, at the Palacio da Ajuda.

In her remarks at the banquet, President Murmu noted that the cultural connections between India and Portugal date back centuries and have left a lasting impact on our shared history.

“These connections are evident in our architecture, historical landmarks, languages, and culinary traditions,” she stated.

She emphasized that this year is particularly important as it marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Portugal.

“With our natural synergy and potential for collaboration across various sectors, our historic ties are evolving into a vibrant and forward-thinking partnership,” remarked President Murmu.

She added that as a knowledge-driven economy, India is leveraging its strengths in areas such as science, technology, information and communication technology, digital public infrastructure, start-ups, and innovation to build an inclusive and sustainable development framework.

Highlighting the significance of the partnership, she said, “We view Portugal as a vital partner in leveraging India’s strengths as a knowledge economy.”

President Murmu also praised Portugal's efforts in enhancing India's relations with the European Union.

She expressed optimism that the bilateral relations between India and Portugal will strengthen and expand in the future, bringing benefits not just to the two nations but to the entire world.
