Ahmedabad, Jan 19 (NationPress) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President and Union Minister J.P. Nadda on Sunday accused the Congress of manipulating the Constitution throughout its 65 years of governance, asserting that its leaders sought to undermine the core tenets of the document.
Speaking at the party’s 'Samvidhan Gaurav Abhiyan' in Ahmedabad, Nadda stated, "The Congress ruled the nation for 65 years, yet its leaders acted against the Constitution. They endeavored to diminish its fundamental provisions, including Jawaharlal Nehru’s backing for granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir."
He asserted that although the creators of the Constitution, led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, designed a thorough and well-considered document, the actions of the Congress-led government did not embody the same ethos.
Referring directly to the annulment of Jammu and Kashmir's special status on August 5, 2019, Nadda commended Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for their courageous measures to integrate the region into the fabric of India.
"When you cast your vote for Modi, electing him as Prime Minister, he and Amit Shah diligently worked to ensure that the special status conferred to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 was revoked, reinstating constitutional equality for the entire nation."
Nadda emphasized a point regarding the Constitution's provisions for Jammu and Kashmir, indicating that the original draft, presented by Ambedkar and submitted to Rajendra Prasad, the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly, did not encompass special status for the region. He noted that Nehru’s government advocated for this contentious decision, which Nadda argued was contrary to the original vision of a unified India. He stressed that while Dr. Ambedkar opposed Article 370 as a temporary measure, it became a lasting element due to political motives.
“In 1975, the Allahabad High Court issued a significant ruling on Indira Gandhi’s election, declaring it invalid due to corrupt practices. In fear of losing power, she declared an Emergency to protect her position. This was a direct assault on democracy,” Nadda remarked, further criticizing Congress’ stance on constitutional issues.
Earlier on Saturday, Nadda praised the current Modi government for its initiatives aimed at empowering citizens, particularly focusing on the Svamitva Scheme. He highlighted the distribution of property cards to 3.17 lakh villages across India, indicating that this marked a vital advancement toward granting rural citizens property rights. The scheme, which utilizes technology to map land records, will benefit over 1.53 lakh farmers.
The BJP chief engaged in the distribution of Svamitva cards alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Governor Acharya Devvrat present at the event.
"The Modi government’s programs like the Svamitva Scheme demonstrate our commitment to uplifting the population of India, especially those residing in rural locations. These initiatives reinforce our determination to ensure that every citizen possesses the resources to secure their future," Nadda concluded.
